Hi Donald:
I wrote an article for Soundboard (journal of the Guitar Foundation of
America -- GFA) on the current state of affairs with woods we use for
guitars from around the world. My conclusion is not very happy: we are
running out of most of the tropical woods we treasure, as well as high
quality soundboard material. In a couple of decades the availability of
guitar woods is likely to be vastly different than it is today. We need
to look for suitable alternatives. Maple, favored for musical
instruments in Europe for hundreds of years, needs to be revisited.
This is why I built this guitar.
Actually it sounds pretty good. I think it is a little less bell-like
than rosewood, but the difference is quite subtle. Maybe not quite as
loud, but, again, very subtle. I think it can be a very successful
alternative but it will take some effort to "sell" the idea. I think
you will see more and more maple guitars in the years to come.
I didn't change anything in the design except to make the back quite
thick: over 3 mm.
